Phase 6 of EMDR, the Body Scan

Blocks spelling out Mind and Body are equally weighted on a scale

Phase 6 of EMDR, the Body Scan, is one of the most important aspects of EMDR processing. After desensitization in phase 4, and installation in phase 5, the client is no longer triggered by the original memory, in fact the client will often feel empowered when they think about the trauma as they have strengthened the connection of the memory with their chosen positive belief. While the mind is now in a healthier place of acceptance, the body can still hold on to unresolved physical sensations from the memory in the form of discomfort and tension, such as a tightness in the chest, stomach churning, etc. Phase 6 is designed to address these physical symptoms so that mind and body are positively aligned.

What Happens During Phase 6, the Body Scan?

  • The client is asked to pair the original memory with the positive belief they had previously installed in phase 5 (e.g. “I did the best I could” or “I can choose who to trust”).

  • The client is asked to scan their body while holding together the memory and positive belief.

  • The client describes what they feel in their body. If they feel any negative sensations, the therapist will guide the client through bilateral stimulation to process the physical disturbances that they feel.

  • Once the client’s body feels calm and reports no negative sensations, phase 6 is complete.

Many of us don’t realize how much of our trauma is stored in the body until it is processed and released. Clients often report feeling light and relaxed by the end of phase 6.

Summary

Phase 6 of EMDR is pivotal in ensuring that the therapeutic gains of EMDR are not only understood with our minds, but can be felt holistically in our bodies as well. EMDR is designed to help you do the deep work of clearing out the old and starting fresh, in both our body and mind.
